The Arcane Order is the result of the disintegration of Autumn Leaves, and has been around as a genre defying entity since sometime in the year 2000. With their second release for Metal Blade Records, "In The Wake of Collisions", The Arcane Order have somehow managed to grab hold of the Extreme Metal cannon of sacred forms and come out the other side manning an arsenal that is untouchable. Seamlessly blending elements of Black Metal, Ambient, Thrash, and a slight peppering of Power Metal, Flemming C. Lund and company have crafted an album that is sure to please every Metal fan.
Beginning with a short bit of atmosphere akin to British bruisers Cradle of Filth, the album bursts forth with a fourth wave Black Metal malevolence that is hard to shake, but that also seems almost limiting in scope. Thankfully this small point of contention is rapidly but to bed with a silver bullet, the band morphing in lycanthrope – like ways to become an unrelenting beast of cross genre seed sowing, dipping their blood drenched fingers into the festering pie of the totality of underground sounds. An amazing hook collides lock-step with furious blasts of noise upon outstanding second track "Between Reason and Hubris," evoking memories of the very best of Groove Metal while still being firmly rooted in all things really-bloody-fast. The tone is then set for the rest of the album to unfold in a strange dance of influence and new thoughts. Never really falling prey to genre conventions, likely because The Arcane Order do not stay cooped up in one headspace, In The Wake of Collision is poised to be a breakout release.
Having not been previously aware of the band’s existence, In The Wake of Collision is an excellent starting point for any fan of extreme music in general to become acquainted with this admittedly eclectic act. I imagine that the waking hours after this particular collision of pure cerebral contortion are frought with confusion, bewilderment, and a sense of wonderment as to precisely what The Arcane Order will come up with next. I, for one, will be first in line to find out what that is.
